How To Stain A Hardwood Floor: A Step-By-Step Guide

Follow this step-by-step guide to stain your hardwood floors like a pro!

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the following supplies:

• Wood stain (oil-based or water-based, depending on preference)

• Sandpaper (60, 80, 100, and 120 grit)

• Orbital or drum sander

• Vacuum and tack cloth

• Wood conditioner (if using softwood or unevenly porous hardwoods)

• Lint-free rags or staining pads

• Paintbrush for edges

• Polyurethane finish (water-based or oil-based)

• Protective gloves and mask

• Painter’s tape and plastic sheeting

Step 2: Prepare the Floor

Proper preparation is key to achieving a flawless stain.

1. Remove Furniture and Clean the Area—Clear the room of all furniture and cover any vents or openings with plastic to prevent dust from spreading.

2. Sand the Floor—Use a drum or orbital sander to remove the existing finish and smooth out imperfections. Start with 60-grit sandpaper, then progress to 80-grit and 100-grit, and finish with 120-grit for a smooth surface.

3. Clean the Floor Thoroughly – Vacuum up all dust and wipe down the surface with a tack cloth to ensure no debris remains before staining.

Step 3: Apply a Wood Conditioner (Optional but Recommended)

A wood conditioner helps the stain absorb evenly, especially on porous or uneven hardwoods like pine. Apply it using a clean cloth or brush, following the wood grain, and let it dry as the manufacturer directs.

Step 4: Apply the Stain

1. Test the Stain First – Always test the stain on a small, inconspicuous area or scrap wood to ensure you like the color before applying it to the entire floor.

2. Apply the Stain Evenly – Use a lint-free rag or staining pad to apply the stain in long, even strokes following the wood grain. Work in small sections to prevent lap marks.

3. Wipe Off Excess Stain – After 5–10 minutes, remove excess stain with a clean rag to prevent blotches. The longer the stain sits, the darker the color will be.

4. Let It Dry – Allow the stain to dry completely, typically 24 hours before applying a finish. Dry times vary based on humidity and ventilation.

Step 5: Apply a Protective Finish

Once the stain is fully dry, seal and protect the floor with polyurethane:

1. Choose Your Finish – Water-based poly dries faster and has a clear finish, while oil-based poly provides a warm, amber tone but takes longer to dry.

2. Apply the First Coat – Use a high-quality brush or roller to apply an even coat of polyurethane.

3. Let It Dry & Lightly Sand – Allow the first coat to dry as recommended, then lightly sand with a fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) and clean up dust with a tack cloth.

4. Apply Additional Coats – Apply at least two more coats, allowing each to dry and sanding lightly in between for the best durability and finish.
